Historic downtown Bowmanville holds close to two hundred businesses in brick that mostly went up in the 1800s. Deep recessed entranceways. Tall openings. Masonry that has been settling for well over a century. Almost nothing down there is square, which is why a brand-new aluminum door dropped into a King Street opening drags at the lock corner by its second winter. Squaring the door to the opening that actually exists, instead of to the dimension on the order form, is most of the work.
Twenty minutes north the job changes completely. Out past Orono, Enniskillen, Tyrone and Newtonville the buildings are shops, mudrooms and outbuildings on open lots, with nothing between them and the wind coming across the fields. Doors get slammed past their stops. Hinge screws pull. Summer gravel dust works into every moving part. There is no vestibule to take the weather, so the entry door does all of it alone.

What we do carry is liability insurance and WSIB coverage, available before the first visit, and a written workmanship guarantee. On any fire-rated opening we work on, the door leaves closing and latching by itself, which is the standard the Fire Code actually sets.
